I can't seem to receive radio messages. A notice will appear on the display that a message has come in but when I go to the radio operator the reply is "no new messages".
What is the event camera and how does that work. I see the commands on the keyboard template but how does it work?
I don't know who came up with the crew assigment screen but I could certainly live without it. All I do is micromange people sleeping. And they fail me at every critical moment. Is there any way to disable the fatigue? It is a royal and unnecessary pain in the a$$.
Another thing, I think it is connected to crew fatigue and may be a bug. Sometimes my deisel engines stop. Usually just before the final stages of firing a torpedo, naturally. I replace everyone in the engineroom with rested crew and the engines still are stopped. I try different settings on the telegraph, but still nothing. I exit to different screens, cuss and eventuallly, after several minutes, the engines start. Any ideas? I found one mod that editied the basic.cfg file. I tried that. All that did was elimnate the exclamation mark which indicates a tired crew member and practically kill all of the crew they were so tired.
Any and all answers would be very appreciated.

For messages just hit the 'M" button on your keyboard and see if you have any messages. May be a 'how you get there thing' . Not sure, reaching a bit here. The event camera fires up automically whem something 'major' happens- torp hits or misses, a ships sinks etc. It will work if you have enabled it in your Realism settings. Crews can be a pain until you get the hang of is, there is a thread somewhere in this forum that goes into it a bit. Generally if you are using time compression do it at at least 64 times. 64 and above will not affect fatigue, everyone stays at whatever fatigue level they are in when you go into 64 times or above. It does get easier, because as your crew gets more expierenced and more medals, they last a lot longer. That and you will get better are managing them. I enjoy it now The only things that shut of your diisel engines that I can think of are -it is really rough an even though you are surfaced a wave can put you so far under the water it gets weird and shuts off you engines -you dive on purpose -you engine crew gets fatigued to the point where the green efficiency bar at the top of the deisel compartment gets so low that there is not enough crew there to make the engines go. -ok, not 100% sure about this one, but it seems that if the efficiency bar at the helm gets too low, weird stuff starts happening too. Execution of orders take forever or just don't happen etc. I have had this weird 'engines won't go from time to time thing as well. Trying to suss it out. But it never does it for more than about a minute game time so is not so bad. Hope some of this helps

fatigue, experiance, and moral all seem to effect operations , engines will stop or not answer if they are tired, inexperianced or unhappy, usually putting an officer with them will get them going again, a tired radioman will not receive or send messages, as also a tired, inexperianced watch or sonar man will not spot / hear contacts, Ive noticed a rested rated watchman or sonarman will detect contacts as much as 2k m further than an unrated ..
alot of it seems to be just a learning curve..
you only need 1 man in torpedo room unless loading or transfering (then load it up)
keep your stearn torpedo room empty (until you need it)and your torpedo selector on stern tube this will prevent that inadvetant hitting the return key and sending a fish into open water
engine crews only need to be rested and full strenght when chasing and attacking (traveling across the map really doesn't matter)
control room rested when you need to give orders (speed changes, steering etc)
finally keep everybody resting unless you need them, when the chase begins, hit F7 click the room ya need and get a full rested crew and let the games begin

thanks for the replies. I got some good info from them. My son and I are hooked on the game. I've had everyone of the sub sims. This one is done very well. I have some of the navigation mods installed but I don't seem to be able to activate them. Do any of you guys use them. I forget the name of thefiles off hand( I'm at work) but they were for the chartroom. I did get the lower righthand corner compas rose to work.

Hi
First a word of thanks to whoever is responsible for this site. Makes the game a lot more enjoyable plus its good to have others to chat with..
Now a question. In the career mode in the very first mission I found a ship that I wanted to sink but the problem was in the rain when I was close enough to him to see him it was too close for the torpedos to arm and when I was far enough ( I think its over 300 m) I couldnt see him!
Any thoughts? Thanks

LOL welcome to the rain of the month club Charlie ..
You basically have 2 options when in that situation...
1. parallel the target at about 50m then hard a port or starboard, keep target in either UZO or scope, when at 180 on target, rudder amidships, fire at 300m stearn tube and cross your fingers
2. if it's not a C2 or bigger let it go and hope for bigger game later, not worth wasting 4 or 5 torpedos on small ships in bad conditions

I have found myself in a middle of a convoy twice now with about 300 to 400 meter visibility. First time at it I sucked, was lucky to get out alive. This time I was way more efficient with the hydrophone. I got right into the middle of the convoy at periscope depth, avoiding getting too close to be spotted by the ships. I took my time sneaking behind each ship to identify it and sunk the juicy ones. To sink them I would just slide up beside themat max vis distance (about 350m) and do a 90% gyro shot at them. Only wasted a torp or two until I figured out how to hit with them at the crazy gyro angle. Thing is, the impact angle was perfect 90 degrees each time. Took a few torps though, as the seas were really rough so did not go for the under the hull shots. Destroyers were looking for me the whole time, but did not seem to be able to pin me down if I stayed surrounded by the merchants. A couple of times a destroyer would start closing in on my 6, I would just lower my periscope, dive to 30 meters or so and go under a ship and into the next ‘row’. The destroyers seem loathe to disturb the track of the merchants when they do not know where you are. So me shifting a row by going under makes for a lot of maneuvering for the destroyer and bought me a lot of time. I played cat and mouse like for at least an hour real time, probably closer to 2. Was a ton of fun really. And really safe too even though I got less that 500 meters of a destroyer several times. Even on days with good visibility and I get detected by the escorts I go right into the convoy. It causes so much chaos with the destroyer trying to get to me through the whole convoy it is easy as pie to get deep enough and change direction and evade the destroyers. Thats another topic though.

Now that I have upgraded my vid card, how does one turn on AA and AF graphic options? Whats the ins and outs with these settings?

Turn it on in the graphics card settings. Right click on the desktop and its in there. AA is anti aliasing. It smooths out jaggedy lines on the wires, on crew ect. Just makes it look smoother and can slow the computer down a bit (shouldnt though)
AF is anistropic filtering. This decides how far the textures go or something similar. So looking down a road it textures the road a long way into the distance and will make it look good. I guess in game it affects the textures of ships at distance and the sea maybe. Lol i used to know this one for sure but i forgot...
When you set them make sure you set them for direct x and for the other card setting (there should be 2 menus in there) its usually just a drag slider or something.

I thought applications like SH3 override any desktop settings. How do I set them to work in SH3?

They do, just make sure your settings are max under the video options area of the game, should do it all from there
