Patrol 18, 8/29/1941 Sent to patrol grid BF77
Patrolled area for 2 days no contacts, plenty of fuel left so I decided to go to the straights around CG 86, Hung around there for another 2 days, only one contact a C2 merchant, which I hunted down and sank. At that point I decided to head back up north. Around dusk I made contact with a Warship, I dove to periscope depth and had a look. I had made contact with a Task force heading right for me . About 7-8 destroyer escorts and 4 king George V Battleships. I was only able to close to within 4500 meters of the battle ships because of the escorts, so I picked the 3rd in line and fired 3 shots at her. After about 2-3 minutes the Torpedo Icons were gone so I figured I missed. I raised the scope again so I could take a final bearing before the ships were out of range so I could send a contact report. As I looked I could not believe my eyes. there was the battle ship doing 1kt. and low in the water at the stern. 3 escorts hovered nearby as the rest headed off. I closed to within 1200 meters and finished off the King George. The 3 escorts tried in vain to hunt me down, but I was able to evade them. I wish I could say that it was skill, but that was a one in a million lucky shot to hit something that far out!!!
