My first career just ended 2nite.. 13 patrols. I was approaching a lone merchant on the surface, when he started shooting at me(the first armed mercantman id come across). crash dived, and then i got closer and surfaced trying to take his gun out. all of a sudden, i hear,
"escort sighted!"
so tried a few more rounds at the merchant,but still hadnt taken his deckgun out so i gave up.crash dive again, the corvette is getting really close.
i headed off on silent running,wasnt too worried, i hadnt been bothered by any escorts up to now, and one corvette wasnt going to do much surely? anyway,i keep him at 180 degrees as much as possible,he's gone the wrong way completely,patting myself on the back,but then i hear, "ping,ping" next thing i know,he's coming right at me, throwing depth charges.
full ahead,right full rudder. i cant stress enough how little i was expecting to come from this attack. all of a sudden,my entire front torpedoe crew are dead, there is major flooding in the front quarters and front torpedoe room,and im nose diving down in 140m of water.
damage control are working like maniacs,but no luck.were too deep and they can only control the flooding. while this is going along and im sitting on the bottom, i hear "wasserbaumen".

another extremely well placed attack, my hull integrity is down to 70 odd, lights are flickering in the control room.
It looks like curtains for old U-49, so i order the chief to blow ballast, go out in a blaze of glory,and maybe snatch victory from defeat. the front two compartments are still almost completely flooded, so as my boat lifts its stern off the bottom, i hit all back emergency,hoping that will help me surface, i get about 30m off the bottom and one last depth charge attack calls it a day.
im very impressed. that corvette was amazing.by reading a few of the posts i was beginning to think there was no chance of getting killed.
well there is. cant wait to start my new career. im going to start it 1941 ish i think,get straight into the action.
