After having just completed our 4th patrol which had proved to be extremly good hunting ..
A total of 36978 T had found the misfortune to cross our path, including 2 C3, 2 C2, and 3 Coastal ..
We began our 5th patrol at dawn displaying our lucky black cat ..
ordered to patrol the coast of France on the Western side, and not being fool enough to travel through the English Channel from which NO Uboat would survive, I elected to take the route around to the North and perhaps find the hunting as good as our last patrol ..
The weather became increasingly bad as we rounded the Northern tier into the North Atlantic but again luck seemed to favor us as a C3 traveling alone came into view, unfortunately it took 4 torpedos to sink her ..
As we traveled South off the coast of Ireland we crossed paths with a second C3, again in heavy seas it took 4 torpedos to send her to the bottom ..
Shortly after a C2 loomed on the horizon and 2 more torpedos had to be used..
With 4 fish left we continued South and received contact with a large convoy traveling SSE, upon making contact with her we found the seas and light not in our favor, unable to keep up with her submerged we had no choice but to shadow her in daylight and hope out luck held in the heavy seas.. this was not to be, for as we shadowed the convoy we were spotted
and all hell broke loose
by diving to 80m turning hard to starboard then hard to port we were able to place ourselves in the middle of the convoy where we could not be detected and maintaining flank speed to keep up submerged
with batteries running low I decided the time for action was at hand, we came to periscope depth and turned hard to port, a T3 tanker lay 490m dead on and all 3 of the forward torpedos sent her to the bottom, this brought a feeling of cheer throughout the boat, it also brought that damn DD almost on top of us as we drove back to 80m..
with only 1 stearn torpedo left we made a hard starboard under a C3 to escape detection came to periscope depth as we passed under her, once I could see her I saw that she flew the American Ensign (Neutral hmmm) I also could see war materials on her deck (neutral my a$$) I fired my last torpedo into her and unbelievably she went down like a rock ..
with no torpedos left, and my radio antenna destroyed, I decided to return to base, and take my lashing for sinking the US ship..
imagine my surprise when the Admiral himself was there to promote me to Lieutenant Sr. and award me with the Knights Cross with oak leaves...
one wonders what the next patrol will bring
