Hey Richard,
Jan. -May 1945:
The end is near and all u-boat commanders know it, and feel it. 120 boats are lost in the final 5 months of the war. Production is severely hampered with only 20 boats completed in the period. Fuel , Ammo, and supplies are in very short supply. However u-boat forces manage to sunk 22 merchants and 3 warships during the period in the remaining operational areas. On May 8th Dornitz sends out a general order for all U-boats to surface that are at sea and surrender to allied forces. 43 u-boats at sea follow the command. The final order given to the remaining boats at base operational or not is to scuttle the boats. close to 200 boats are scuttled in German ports. All u-boat personnel surrender to British or American forces. All avoid the Soviets as a surrender option. 3 days later Dornitz is arrested and stands trail at Nuremberg, he is convicted of war crimes and spends the next 11 years behind bars. The Americans , British and Soviets capture vital u-boat technologies to use in their own Post war submarine fleets.
