Hi Dominico, Monty was British I was asking about Germans I'm sorry to say I am not a fan of Monty take El Alamein OK he did regroup are forces and when he went over to the attack it took three or four attempts to break through Rommel's lines who was a much better general and conducted a good withdraw back to Tunisia and don't forget that surprise he gave the Americans in the Kasserine Pass Monty was to slow to act he could have done better. Rommel would had won if he got the supplies he needed but Hitler was to busy on the Russian front and at the end of the day the only reason the Germans were in North Africa was those useless Italians messed up big time to this day I think Hitler should have not got that friendly with Mussolini. Operation Goodwood badly planned over 900 Allie tanks turned in to scrap metal. Operation Market Garden was also badly executed poor planing of both operations was dreadful Monty was over promoted which was poor judgment. As a front line general not to bad and should have stayed there on the front line where he was best suited. Richard

Ouch, market garden was not monty alone planning. He came up with the idea, which initially ran well. Its flaws were in bad supply (Faulty radios ect, nothing to do with montey) and bad intell. You forget the allied D-day landings? Commanded by montey. He also did amazingly in North Africa. You cant blame resources or lack of resources, as in that case then no German general would be good as they all had better equipment then anyone else My favourite german would be Rommel though, untill he was beaten by montey. Or the guy who was promoted to field marshal by hitler as he knew no german field marshal had surrendered ever (the guy in russia) but he still surrendered to the russians anyway instead of killing all his troops. To me that was a brave decision!

Hi Dominico Experts regard Monty over promoted and better left on the front line moving on your thinking of Field Marshal Paulas was a religious man who re guarded suicide a sin and the only reason he was promoted to Field Marshal was Hitlers was giving him permission to blow his brains out. Paulas was a desk general who was put in charge of the sixth army and he made the mistake to strip the rear of top troops leaving the Romanians which resulted in being in circled and should have try-ed to breakout and meet Manstein half way but no he followed Hitlers orders to the letter granted at the end his decision to stay alive was interesting Hitler makes the remark "Thats the last bloody general I promote in this war" yes he did promote other generals latter on.
