I had a problem with this months ago and posted on the ubi forums, my fan packed up. Everyone told me to go get a new one caus it was essential!! Well i did, and this one was just as noisy and annoying Also now this one has packed up too... Well i was looking for passive coolers someone told me about and found the Zalman NB 47J www.coolpc.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=444Looks cool and is silent so no more problems! But i noted that my computer already has a tiny passive cooler on the northbridge, and so far that fan has been out of action for 3 days, and my computer has yet to melt... (touches wood...) Well i was wondering 2 things, first anyone know where i can order one of these passive coolers from in the UK? and... Do i really need to bother? I dont think i am going to lol, unless one of you can panic me sufficiently. Im starting to think its either just for safety sake they put on the fan or the cold weather in england makes it unnecessary. Maybe its only for arabia... What do you think?

Your NB chipset can get VERY hot. Especially if you overclock any. The increse in FSB will really jack up temps quick. I remember seeing some thermal images done on Tomshardware.com on chipsets and there are times they can get as hot as the CPU. But even if you dont Overclock..engineers design those heatsinks/fans on the chipset for a reason

yeah i thought so, but could it just be as an "incase" my room is pretty cold, and no doubt these boards go all round the world. Well for now its been going for a week and not melted. So i will keep it up till i get a chance to go to the shop and buy one of these passive coolers There is a mini passive cooler under the fan, which disapates heat a little. Seems ok so far.

Like faamecanic said, those heatsinks/fans are there for a reason. I wouldn't run without one. Even if there are no immediate ill effects, there is no point inviting them. Cooler is better than hot. Let's not try to create problems

lol ok guys, well it started making a wicked smell last night lmao so i flicked the fan and tried to get it spinning, and its going again Finish work soon so going to go check a shop with really funky parts in it and see if they have a usb Board to attach to the white plug spaces in the computer (cant remember the names of anything today) and a passive cooler, that zalman thing. When i was trying to flick the fan the area around it was VERY hot lol, it must have been almost cooking.
