How do YOU do it? You only have so many torps, the destroyers are cruising around, all the juicy targets are in the middle of the convoy. I have not seen that many to get good at it yet, but what I think i am going to do is send 2 of the electic eels into the best target (troop ship or whatever), and one each into 2 of the closest C3/ T3. Do a 180, fire off the aft torp into the closest big merchant type then go into 'shadow the convoy mode' until the destroyers give up on me and go back into escort duty. Then rinse and repeat. I am really open for ideas though.

I'm not sure if this will work later on when their ASW gets better but what i do is get in front of the convoy and position myself so that they will pass right over me. Not directly over but you get the idea. If you get it right you can fire all 4 foreward tubes AND your aft at targets without having to move.
Once I'm about in the middle of the convoy ( you should already be rigged for silent and stopped so they cant hear you) I fire ALL my fish at the biggest and juciest targets and then dive deep and run.
Dont worry about hitting them all, i've got 5 shots in my VIIB and i'll usually get 3 if i'm lucky. Most of the time i've got atleast one that does not want to sink. Later on i usually get the "enemy destroyed message" because it just too some time.
The trick is to wait and let them come to you, moving around is just asking the escourts to spot you.
Also DONT watch to see what you hit, as soon as you fire dive and run. The escourts will chase you for a LONG time so try and lose them.

What ended up happening is I got detected, but the destroyers were so far apart I actually got lucky and sunk them one at a time. The closest I got nose on as he was coming for me (this was the luckiest hit). Another came at my aft right after that but I had some time to run so he fell in right behind me and sunk him with my aft torp. The third and final I managed to swing arounf for, which was good cause he dodged 2 of my torps before my last loaded one got him. Got away from the convoy because the damned troop ship started firing on me. So I got out of their sight range, loaded up my torps and transfered my exteriors stores into my interior stores. Torped the troop ship, and spent my remain fore and aft torps on the biggest ships. Surfaced and went crazy with my deck gun. I sunk the whole convoy, 14 ships. 4 with torps and the rest deck gun. The 4 with the torps was the hard part, the other 10 with the deck gun was easy as it gets. As you say, betcha this does not work later on. No way one will be able to take on 3 destroyer escorts and come out alive. Is only 1940 at the moment. Thing is, I need to relaod. The nearest base is my home base, and if I go in there I end my mission don't I. And not having completed my 24 hour patrol in the assigned area will mean sinking 14 ships is less renown than sinking a few and completing the patrol.

Not true, just send a radio message updating your status. When you tell them your out of torpedoes they will order you to return to port.
They dont realy care if you spend 24 hours in your patrol zone, they just want you to go over in that vacinity and sink as many enemy ships as possible to cause trouble for the allies. You'll get alot of renown for sinking an entire convoy and they will be very happy.

When i attack a convoy i usually try to positon myself on a perpendicular course, at arround 700 - 800 meters. When the lead ship passes by i wait for the really big ships, usually placed in the middle to get right ahead of me and fire as many torps as i have on the big ones. Than i cranck up the engines and go deep, straight into the convoy so the destroyers can't ping me arround all those ships. When the tubes are reloaded i go up for a second run at them, and than take off...
The trick is at first to have surprize on your side, and than have confusion on your side (when you attack from INSIDE the convoy). That's about how they did it in real life (only they had wolfpacks).

The craziest thing happened yesterday. I got inside a convoy and nailed two tankers and a C2. I started manuevering to stay in the convoy and keep the DDs confused when all of a sudden I had the biggest traffic jam above me. I had ships all pointing at one another and it was crazy.
It turns out two of the destroyers were in the middle and dead in the water. I torped one as it was trying to back its way out of the mess and caught the other one stuck in the middle. I was then able to wander around and sink things at will. Some of the merchants deck guns gave me some damage because I was so close.
If it wasn't for those stupid dud torpedos, I would have finished the entire convoy!

Ok, all i have done during the campaign is go to an area and look around for merchants and usually take them out with the deck gun. Where are all of the convoys coming from. I never run into any. It's always just a single merchant.
