This may be lame, but Ive seen it asked alot so I'll note it just for info
(F5) Navigation Map
Friendly Ports and ships appear BLUE
Neutral Ports and ships appear GREEN
Enemy Ports and ships appear RED
so if you are tracking a RED and find him FIRE 1
if you just blunder into one you will have to check the flag (you can then check post color)
I havent reached the point in the game year to know if unrestricted comes into play as it should

I would like to know if people take out fishing boats?
When i play i like to play in a realistic way if you get me, and in real life i would never sink a fishing boat, so likewise i dont do it in the game. Do you guys pop them? Do you actually use torps on them or only the deck gun?

I sometime deck gun them. Depends a lot on if the area I am is one of those 'if you sink something there will be planes and destroyers in the area in 30 minutes' I always go after Coastal Merchants with deck gun only. The light range of merchants and cargo I thwap with a single torp first and then finish em off with the deck gun if necessary. Meduims (C2/C3 etc) I hit em with 2 torps and finish them off with the deck gun if necessary. Of course, it all depends how much activity is in the area. I am not going to surface and let loose with my deck gun if I have a DD on my sonar.... Doing this I find I run out of torps and deck gun ammo at about the same time. I adjust my methods if I am going through either one faster than the other.

My First Patrol Missions out of Kiel. Before I learn how to save. A career misson. First time I was to leave in AM Approx 2 AM from Kiel So I though I would set way points. "Wrong" I looked up and did a full right rudder or would have crashed into pier. so I wait till Dawn and Visual Nav north with Seagulls. clear channel head for open sea's Smoke on horizion a DD showed green on map. Just to be sure when to P-dept till he cleared area. Then heading North toward English channel Smoke on Horizon was a small english tug boat. then I lost the save. Start Career over again this time I think around 72% this time ships don't show on map just do a visual and there they are. Last night in area A071 I saw the small ship coming south manned deck gun and sunk him with about 3 rounds I fired the deck gun. Captains log shows a small trawler? I feel bad now. I am on way to AM18 for a 24 hr patrol of Area. Do You guys engage traffic on way to assigned area? Save your torps and use deck gun if no enemy warships around? The way I am set up I may not make it My First patrol with Green Co and Crew. 70% Realism Will radio progress if we don't stumble on a DD Lane

I rammed a fishing boat once, not a good idea.\
I use my deck gun on costal merchants (theres alot of them too) since i see no reason wasting a fish on something i can sink quickly shooting at the waterline. If its anywhere near an enemy port i'll use a torpedo.
For c2 and c3 cargos i try and get the torpedo to explode under the keel if the water is calm. If the waves are big i just fire 2 instead since the keel bobs ALOT.
To answer the posters question, you can shoot any ship you want, but their nation will attack you for a while if you do. Also you only get renown for enemies NOT neutrals (green). You lose renown for hitting allies but you can still do it if you realy want to.

I think I have realism set around 72% sometimes I see the color icon red ship on map just before I make a visual. After that there is nothing on map? I see the ship approching like to night I sunk two lone merchants. When they approch I cheat a little I ran my free camera out to check flags 2 looked to be flying the union Jack British. I am going to use all my fish before I get to my patrol zone. I guess it is possible to think you sunk a allied ship and may be a Neutral? In Sept 1939 who was Germany Attacking shipping British ships? I may get chewed out if I make it back to Kiel? Lane ;D

Haha the best way to see who you can fight, is to look on the map. Any country which has red ports is attackable. Everyone else no! When the game starts you can only attack poland. Then it changes as Britain and france declare war. I am working on something cool which may make it all more easy but its top secret... (where is the ninja smilie?)

I guess early Sept 1939 I should just go to my assigned patrol zone and not attack any ships? I did see some on map just for a short time "Red." Then the contactwas gone? then Bridge made a visual on Merchant? I made a surface attack and sunk ship? Another one was a cargo ship. I must have realism set to high? Made surface attack in high sea's getting low on torps think I have two or three left? You are right i think poland was the first country they declare war on. I need to go check Captains log see what it says I was a small boy in 1939 I was born in 1936 I am telling my age ;D Lane

I started in 1st flotilla which allows you to start as early as possible.
Polland is neutral for me while brittan is hostile.
