I can figure this out. I am in the beginning career and I see some red and green squares that in the training mission were ships. So I go there and cant find a damn thing! What is going on? Is this supposed to be a false sonic signal or do my bi focals need changing!! Thanks

Sometimes you get 'reports' of ships locations via your radio. These are not real time updated like contacts you can see (through UZO?Binocs etc). They place the ship(s) once for you and show you the direction they were going and the rough speed. You need to take this info and work out a intercept course (see the help files at the Dom's main page). Whats happening to you is yopu are goping to where they were at time of report. Speaking of which, the time it was seen is also shown if you click on the 'ship' icon on the main map as well.

read the tutorial on navigation and attack, a red square will appear (basically as you are told by radio) with a time sighted draw your line in the direction it is travelling, if it takes you 2 hours to get to the red square, that ship will be 2 hours down the line NOT where you see the square

Use the compass or line to plot the tgts' course , then note it's speed , if the tgt is moving slow (8kts) in one hour it'll be 8 nautical miles from the spot where it showed up , (1 Nm = 1.828Km ), etc, plot your course to a point infront of the tgts course , bearing in mind how fast the contact is moving at, and when you get to that point began a search, by projecting you course 3 or 4 km either side either side of the contacts course

What I do when I get a contact (red square) is first I look at the contacts speed (slow = 4-5 kts, Med 7 -9kts and Fast...well I never intercepted a fast contact).
I take that speed and using my ruler try and match the contacts last reported direction (by using the "tail" on the contact) and speed in 3 hour increments (where will he be in 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours or 24 hours). There are some handy table posted on subsim (or I could email you the tables I use..just PM me).
I then draw another line with my ruler from my subs current position to the line I just drew for the contact (draw line from sub to the 3 hour, six hour, 12 hr mark on the contacts line) to find out where I can intercept. If I can make it running 10 kts (again using the table), for example, then I will set up at that position and wait.
I ALWAYS have a maxed watch crew when going to intercept. there have been lots of times the contact almost runs INTO me :-)
If the contact is not in visual range when I get into my predicted intercept point, I will dive (if not already submerged) and listen for him on the hydrophones. If you listen in the general direction you expected him to come from you should hear him (unless he is already past your predicted intercept point...in which case he will be on the Opposite side).
I try to position myself so when I hear the contact he is either around bearing 085 and or 275 (depending on which way the contact is coming at me). That way Im assured a fairly close intercept.
Im getting to the point where Im about 1000 meters away from the contact by the time he is at bearing 0 deg. And my AOB is usually +/- 10 deg from 90 deg.
As you sit and wait for the contact to come to you... you can go ahead or back to adjust your distance of where you think he will be by the time he reaches 0 deg bearing.
