I just got SHIII over the weekend, so have limited experience, and would appreciate some help. I've yet to find a good explanation of how renown really works. I finished the academy tutorials with "1500 renown". Is this a number that simply increases over your career, sort of like "experience points" in RPGs, or is renown a system of credits that you "spend" to "buy" more experienced crew members?
After academey, at base, when I added experienced crew, my renown decreased by the amount of the crew member's. But then I noticed I could even go to negative renown.
Can someone please explain all this to me, or point me to a thorough explanation. Thanks in advance!

Renown allows you to upgrade your crew and your U-boat when you finish a patrol. You get a set amount of renown for each type of ship you sink and, at the end of a patrol, if upgrades are available, you can spend it to buy them.

Kepp in mind...dont go crazy spending that renown as soon as you get it. A type IXB costs something like 3,500, a IXC 6,500, and a XXI costs 30,000!!!
And what really sucks is when you buy a new sub, all the upgrades in your old sub DO NOT carry over. Its not like when you trade in a car to buy a new one, and you get SOME money for your car. YOu get ZERO for your trade in with SHIII.
I think the game should give you SOMETHING for any upgrades you put in. When I had my Type VII B I had upgrded engines and Batteries (was about 2500 renown). And I had to buy them ALL OVER when I upgraded to the IX B
