Renown ?

Should i create a character in career mode before working my way through the accademy in order to make best use of any renown earned in my subsequent carreer or can it just be "stuck on " after ? New to sub's, sim's and Pc games in general . Many thanks. ( The rating formerly known as Navyblue )
