A secret Nazi impaling device? Do your boats have one?

You are quite right. It is a form of impaling device. However, this device only becomes available on upgrading to a type VIIC boat or later. It is known as a paper spike and was very handy for keeping those old radio messages close by for reference, and also for all the invoices from BDU for your spare parts, torpedoes, deck and flack gun ammunition etc. ;D It was not a very popular upgrade as it could only be used in a flat calm, (a bit like the deck gun) otherwise the papers would get soaked by the spray and the ink would run making them illegible. In severe cases the papers would be torn from the spike altogether and be whisked away in the gales. I offer this image to bear out my explanation.

Thx con20or. I couldn't resist . I have no idea what it really is though. I wouldn't mind knowing either, now that you've made me curious ;D.

could it be the radio antenna?surely they would put that higher though. it seems to be part of that metal handle underneath it. Its not part of the biscay cross is it? and it shows up like that before its invented? A bit like the hydrophone station having a "sende" label, but no button(since 1.1 or was it 1.2?)?

I though it was a Radio Antenna ? Don't see any other things that look like a antenna? Like you said I don't remmber if it was there before patch or on the V11B boat? That's the only two boats I have had on patrol V11b and V11C Lane ;D

OK I've looked it up in my book about type-VII u-boats. It's indeed a retractable rod antenna (albeit not modelled to well).
The primary means of communicating back and forth was via short wave transmissions (3-30MHz), which were recieved by the rod antenna, supplanted by the large antenna cables which run fore and aft from the tower.

A radio antenna would make sense of course. So it's not a paper spike then? ;D
