www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/index.shmlOnce on the page, click on the (orange button) Listen Again. Then under "Shows By Type" click on HISTORY (2) , then under "Scots At War" click on TUE This is a half hour radio programme talking to veterans of the WWII russian convoys .It's very well done and i can't reccomend it enough. Sorry if the instructions for the link are a bit cumbersome, perhaps the more technical members of this forum could make it easier. Obviously it concentrates on the ship's but there are descriptions of attacks by U boats and Luftwaffe aircraft. Please check it out and let me know what you think.....................

Just tried it now con20or, (22:00 GMT) it seems to be working ok for me , have you tried the " nothing playing ? get help listening" panel on the left of the page ? there are some options there perhaps you need real player or some other option. Hope you can suss it as i really enjoyed listening when it was broadcast this morning. Some really excellent eye witness testimony, very descriptive and moving. Really cannot understand why tony Blair and the Brittish government insist they can't cast a medal for these guy's. Merchantmen serving in other theatre's only had to spend 24hr's to qualify for a medal yet the rusian convoys had to amass 6 mth ! The only medals these guy's have got are two from the Ruskies. They are fetted as hero's by the locals when they visit murmansk and Arkchangel. Surely they deserve better...........................................................

ok,ill try it again, thanks. yeh, the merchantmen had a dreadful time in ww2. you would wonder why they just didnt join the navy, increased safety, glory etc.. I remember hearing that when a R.N sailor was sunk etc, his pay continued to amass even if he was captured or presumed dead, until it was proven or after a certain amount of time. but merchant navy sailors ,as soon as their ship was sunk they were technically "unemployed" and had nothing waiting for them when they got home. what a raw deal.
