I am new this so pardon a dumb question! Are we supposed to return to base after the mission? I did the first mission and sunk a British warship as told but then when I tried to end the mission I was told I could not return to base submerged. From this I understand that I am to return to one of the Blue cities on the map unlike in the practice missions. Is this correct ?
thanks

You can't sail in to port submerged because the waters going into port aren't deep enough. Check your depth by using the Navagator and also use the Free View from underneath your sub. You'll see what I mean. Then you'll be able to return to the base you left from. I think Lorient's waters will have only 5 meters under your keel.

If you are meaning the single missions when you finish them you just have to press escape. If you are under attack you may not be able to finish. Just press escape and then quit mission i think it is, and it will show you your results. If you mean in a campaign again you can finish by just escape. But if you want to play the game more realistically sail back to the port you came from and dock up in the pens or at the peir where the band are. Or you can just get near it and press escape.
Either way it doesnt really matter so if the journey home bores you just escape and you will be there instantly.
Is this what you meant? Ps i think for the campaign you have to be on the surface to return to port via the escape option.

Yup, you need to be surfaced with no enemy ships/planes nearby.

There can be enemy planes and ships nearby, they just cannot have discovered you.
To return to base with escape you need to. 1. Be surfaced 2. Not be discovered.
