Then sonar dude will announce bearing and approx distance of merchant. The sende button is definately taken out of the early subs with 1.2 Hummmm my SO NEVER announces approx distance with hydrophones...dont know about Sonar as my VIIB doesnt seem to have it yet. |

they only announce distance when they pick up the contact, and they tend to lose it alot in heavy seas

The only distance my SO (I have two Sr. Chief Warrant Officers with radio ratings that I swap out to keep fresh) has ever announce is Long range, Medium range, and close.... its that what you all are talking about?
Again keep in mind I only have hydrophones right now....no sonar yet.

Well today i had my SO operator tell me there was a ship bearing (whatever it was), close range and closing fast.
I gave both the radio and sonar operator the radio specialization and promoted and gave them medals. That was the only time i ever heard anything out of him as he quickly shut up and started to report "no sonar contact"
